Even the Secret Service can’t protect the First Lady from getting her identity stolen in a breach of security. In recent news that almost everyone has heard about, Mrs. Obama was a victim of identity theft leaving her credit report publicized for everyone to view.
Her credit report which included her social security number, phone numbers and personal banking information was revealed to the public via a ‘hacker’ oriented website. The site also disclosed personal financial information for famous celebrities such as Jay-Z, Britney Spears and Kim Kardashian.
If someone as powerful as Mrs. Obama was affected by hacking, just about anyone is a target. There are certain steps you can take to help guard against identity theft, while at the same time staying on top of your personal financial and publicly available information.
For starters, make sure you’re checking your credit report and scores regularly. Your credit report provides a running history of aliases, accounts opened in your name, and public records information that could impact your credit and reputation.
When it comes to your social security number, do not give it out to just anyone and do not carry your social security card with you when it’s not needed. Be cautious about with whom you share your personal information, especially when making online transactions.
In the case of a data breach, information a company has about you can become lost, stolen, or even sold. While there's no way to ensure that the companies you transact with won't become a victim of a breach, there are steps you can take to mitigate the damage done in case your information be compromised, such as enrolling in an identity theft protection service.
